Watercolor Party

I had been wanting to try my hand at watercolors for a long time now, and this past week it finally happened. I took many art classes in school way back when and found I was best at color pencils and oil pastels; something about watercolors and me just didn't mesh well, so I never really stuck with it. But lately I've been drawn to the idea of mixing watercolors with calligraphy, so I knew I had to give it a whirl.

My husband's marketing firm, Hunt Marketing, happens to employ two graphic designers who are also very talented art majors and watercolor artists. Julia Tatum is one of them, so she spent the afternoon with my creative assistant Lauren and me this past Tuesday and we had a watercolor party. Seriously fun!

I was a little intimidated by the paint being kind of out of control at first. Remember I'm used to letterforms and ink flowing from teensy tiny nibs! But once I started brushing the colors on the paper more and more, I found it pretty relaxing and fun. I couldn't resist dropping some paints in my nib too for a new spin on a familiar tool. I'm still working on lettering with the brush itself. Have to remind myself that these things take practice!

Here are some more pics from our little girls afternoon painting pretty things. (Photos courtesy of Julia Tatum, also a talented a photographer!) Be on the lookout for some new and colorful items in my shop soon!
